Outdoor Activities & Fitness
A huge choice of outdoor activities and things to do are available in Mid Wales in addition to the fantastic wildlife watching, walking and cycling described on this site. You can pony trek in open country with the Lion Royal Trek, Rhayader or ride and hack with Underhill Riding Stables, Dolau. Free riding routes and maps can be found on a very informative Powys County Council site. For groups, high rope challenge, rock climbing and kayaking sessions may be booked with Elan Valley Lodge while Llangorse Multi Activity Centre offers a variety of outdoor and indoor activities for children and families. Canoeing is available on the Wye, some sections being subject to access restrictions. Check with Canoe Wales and other informative sites. Hands on Falconry Experiences on a Mid Wales hill farm are available from Hawksdrift Falconry and you can book fungi forays with a local expert in the autumn. Fly fishing and coarse fishing in the rivers and lakes is a tranquil and popular activity and further information can be found through individual angling associations.
If you like a challenge and a lot of fun, why not try Learn Outdoors for a Hill Skills and Navigation course or Bushcraft Skills, where you will be wildcamping and perhaps building your own sauna.
The small towns in Mid Wales offer some wonderful fitness activities in leisure centres and village halls. You can play squash, swim and use the gym for modest prices or for the fit and active, join a zumba, aerobics or circuits session. Access the Powys County Council site for information about leisure centres.
